You Are Made For Glory

Image
Made for Glory by Vicki Kemper | published on Jun 11, 2022 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. – Psalm 8:3-5 (NRSV) However you’re feeling today—hopeful or despairing, powerless or inspired, lonely or madly in love—there’s something the psalmist wants you to know. Whatever you’re doing today—marching for an end to gun violence, taking your kids to soccer practice, working a second job to make ends meet, or doing laundry and cleaning house—there’s something I want you to know. Something Borrowed

Image
This wedding dress was borrowed from The Grab and will be worn in the bride's June wedding. Her mother was shopping the Grab for wedding shoes, as the Grab often has dresses and shoes suitable for the mother of the bride. As they were looking at shoes, the mother learned that a wedding dress had been donated to the Grab a couple of years ago. The bride who donated the gown felt it was a true gift to donate the gown for another bride borrow and use on her special day. The bride's mother took it home for the bride to try on and, as you can see, it fits perfectly. This bride will borrow the gown, have it cleaned and returned to the Grab for yet another bride to borrow. Now she just needs to find something blue. What makes sense is going to your local thirft store and picking up 5 paiars for the same price as that $40.00 pair. But it is not just jeans. Saving the Pollinators, We Can’t Live Without Them

Image
Pollination is an essential ecological survival function. Without pollinators, the human race and all of earth’s terrestrial ecosystems would not survive. Of the 1,400 crop plants grown around the world, i.e., those that produce all of our food and plant-based industrial products, almost 80% require pollination by animals. Visits from bees and other pollinators also result in larger, more flavorful fruits and higher crop yields. In the United States alone, pollination of agricultural crops is valued at 10 billion dollars annually. Globally, pollination services are likely worth more than 3 trillion dollars. More than half of the world’s diet of fats and oils come from animal-pollinated plants (oil palm, canola, sunflowers, etc.). More than 150 food crops in the U.S. depend on pollinators, including almost all fruit and grain crops. The USDA estimated that crops dependent on pollination are worth more than $10 billion per year. Click here to download the brochure: The Simple Truth: We

Earth Day Month Long Celebration Series - Composting

Image
Making Earth Day a Month-Long Celebration Series from Pleasant Hill Community Church Food scraps. Okay, those aren’t the first words that come to mind when you think about the environment. But 22 percent of the municipal solid waste dropped into landfills or incinerators in the U.S. is, in fact, food that could be put to better use through composting and soil enrichment. Moreover, food-scrap recycling programs, while still relatively uncommon, are having a growth moment in the U.S.; they’ve roughly doubled in size since 2010. Now, a national study by MIT researchers provides one of the first in-depth looks at the characteristics of places that have adopted food recycling, revealing several new facts in the process. Why does composting Matter? As stated previously, food represents the single largest occupant in landfills here in the US. Only 3% of food is composted. Getting food to our tables: • Food production eats up to 10% of the US energy budget • Uses 50% of US land • Uses 80

Week 2 of Pleasant Hill Community Church Earth Day Series - Replacing Disposables with Reusables

Image
Replacing disposables with reusables We all have plastic bags, cups and single use items around the house. Let’s take a look at some of the ways we can replace the disposables with reusables. We know that it can seem over-whelming but let’s just look at a couple of easy replacements. It’s important to keep in mind that reusable items take energy and resources to produce as well, so the general rule with reusable is to use them repeatedly and consistently to offset their environmental impact. Paper and plastic drink cups: Paper coffee cups have a plastic coating that makes them unacceptable for recycling and composting, meaning they have to go in the trash. And although plastic cups are recyclable, the plastic cannot be recycled indefinitely and eventually becomes trash. Remember to bring a reusable coffee mug or cup when you get takeout (some places even give you a discount!), or take some extra time and sit down at a café that uses reusable cups. Also, get in the habit of carr

The Covenants of the Cross - What is it and Why is it?

Image
The Cross on display at Pleasant Hill Community Church , UCC is called the Cross of the Covenants and was given to the Church by Ed and Goldie Schneider. The following is from the flyer that came with the Cross, and during this time of Lent and with all that is occurring around the world we thought it would be nice to share. It is a relevant today as when William R. Simmons created the flyer. The Cross of the Covenants – What it is The Cross of the Covenants is actually a combination of symbols in itself, of time-honored use in the Christian Church . The familiar Celtic Cross ( cross and circle) attests to the death and resurrection; the Cross of the Covenants adds the important detail of the identity of Person: the Lord Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to the people of Isreal to elevate a son of David to a throne that shall endure forever . Accordingly, the Cross of the Covenants includes the Star of David , the sign of the Old Covenant, even as the Cross is the s

Beginning with the 1st Saturday in March, that is March 5, your can stuff all you can into a bag (provieded by the Garb) for only $5. Yes, it is madness. Let’s talk about fabric stashes. Almost every sewist we know has one. Some would argue I have more than one. Sewists as a breed tend to have a habit of buying and collecting fabric. You’ve heard the adage—sewing and buying fabric are two different hobbies. This resolution isn’t about shopping your stash, although, of course, we recommend it—the most sustainable fabric is the fabric you already own. No, this resolution is about revisiting our buying habits. So, where do you start? There are many different places you can thrift fabric. YThe Grab is the most obvious. You don’t only have to look for large pieces of fabric, though—other items of ready to wear clothing can be thrif

Pleasant Hill Community Church Sermon Series - Spirituality and the Twelve Steps

Image
Pastor Houston, the interm Pastor of Pleasant Hill Community Church has announced his Sermon Series for March 6 – April 10 Spirituality and the Twelve Steps. Using Richard Rohr ’s book Breathing Underwater as a foundation, Pastor Houston will lead our thoughts on how “The 12 steps” is a spiritual tool to help in your own personal transformation. “The deepest and most important spiritual lessons I (have) ever learned came from a circle of drunks, fighting desperately not to drink today, whom I initially viewed as low-life, losers, and who ultimately came to be, for me, the oracles of God. The Twelve steps in no way diminished my appreciation for the gospel of Jesus Christ – quite the contrary- I am more convinced than ever of the reality of the gospel story.” — A quote from a 12 step movement member in A People’s History of Christianity , by Diana Butler Bass The Pleasant Hill Community Church is located at 67 Church Drive, Pleasant Hill, TN.  The church is a congregati

Pleasant Hill Community Church Updates Memorial Garden Planting

Image
Three urns, holding native flowering plants will be added to the Memorial Garden's inner circle this Spring. The new crescent bed surrounding the circle will be a beautiful native flower garden, where we can feel closer to nature, get our hands in the dirt, and experience being direct caretakers of creation. It’s also a place where we can learn about the impact of native plants. Native plant populations are decreasing which impacts the local environment. Local insects and birds are dwindling as do our native plants. Just as we have impacted nature with planting non-native plants, we can revserse the harm through the project of Homegrown National Park has proven how this can work. In addition to the Memorical Garden Native plantings, team members will be adding small plots of native plants, throughout the Uplands and Pleasant Hill communitities. The insects and birds will fly from plot to plot, wildlife will be sustained and biodiversity flourish. For information on how y
